Gateway Award

Posted on

The Gateway Award is an activity award scheme which people with a learning disability, of any age or ability, can take part in.

The award encourages people to gain new skills and experiences, become more independent, make friends, be active in the community and improve their health and wellbeing.

There are three levels of the Gateway Award, made up of five different activities: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of each stage.

The Mencap Gateway Awards Programme runs every Thursday and Friday, throughout the year.

Participants come to one of the two sessions to complete modules which lead to an award at the end of the year.

The 5 Gateway Modules are:

Hobbies – This module involves participation in activities such as art and craft, cookery and other leisure activities

Fitness – This module involves activities such as gym, tennis, golf, multi-sport and Tai Chi

Lifestyle – This module involves activities such as gardening, travel training, healthy eating courses and money skills

Volunteering – This module involves contributing to your community.

Challenge – Everybody completes a Gateway Challenge as part of their Award. This year participants have completed challenges such as sponsored abseils, sponsored walks and sponsored swims.
